The multifamily housing industry thrives on strong leadership, adaptability, and continuous learning. Jamie Smith, CAPS, CAM, District Manager in Central Virginia with PRG Real Estate, exemplifies these qualities. From starting as a Leasing Representative to overseeing multiple luxury communities, Jamie’s career reflects a dedication to professional growth, mentorship, and excellence in property management.
After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011 with a degree in Business Management and Administration, Jamie transitioned into the multifamily industry in 2015. A recommendation from industry professional Catherine Hinkle opened the door to a position with PRG Real Estate as a Leasing Representative at Hyde Park Apartments in Chester. With no prior experience in the field, Jamie quickly proved to be a natural leader. Within six months, a promotion to Assistant Property Manager followed, and by the summer of 2016, Jamie had taken on the role of Property Manager after PRG acquired two additional properties in Richmond.
Hyde Park was more than just a property—it was a foundational experience that shaped Jamie’s expertise in community management. From maintenance coordination and collection procedures to financial tracking and budgeting, Jamie gained a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to manage a thriving community.
In 2018, Jamie’s efforts in revitalizing Hyde Park were recognized when PRG named Jamie Property Manager of the Year—a milestone achievement that highlighted a growing leadership role within the company.
As PRG Real Estate expanded, so did Jamie’s responsibilities. A promotion to Senior Property Manager led to the oversight of four legacy communities across the Richmond region. When PRG ventured into new construction, Jamie successfully led the lease-up at South Falls Tower in 2021, further demonstrating a talent for high-level property operations.
By 2024, Jamie had earned the title of District Manager, now overseeing five luxury apartment communities in Central Virginia. Beyond operational excellence, Jamie’s leadership skills flourished through team development, mentoring employees, and fostering internal growth. Many team members advanced under Jamie’s guidance, a testament to the strong leadership and commitment to professional development.
Jamie’s impact extends beyond PRG Real Estate. Active involvement with the Virginia Apartment Management Association (VAMA) has been instrumental in professional growth. Through VAMA, Jamie earned the Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS) and Certified Apartment Manager (CAM) designations and served on the Events and Education Committee in 2020.
Jamie’s contributions were further recognized with a role on the VAMA Advisory Committee for 2024 and 2025. In 2021, Jamie was honored as Community Manager of the Year at VAMA’s annual awards ceremony, a reflection of industry-wide respect and recognition.
Looking back on the past decade, Jamie’s journey in multifamily housing has been shaped by mentorship, leadership, and a passion for professional development. The opportunities provided by PRG Real Estate and the multifamily industry in Richmond have been instrumental in shaping a rewarding career.
Jamie remains dedicated to fostering the next generation of industry professionals, mentoring through VAMA’s NextGen committee, and continuing to make a lasting impact on both PRG and the broader multifamily housing community.
Jamie’s story is an inspiration to those looking to build a fulfilling career in property management—one that thrives on continuous learning, adaptability, and the power of a strong professional network.
