More Than a Trade

In a world where many career paths seem pre-determined, Gustl Majcen’s journey into plumbing began as a simple elective. What started as a way to get out of high school classes turned into a lifelong passion, skill, and career—one that has been both fulfilling and rewarding.

A Serendipitous Start

“When I first started plumbing in high school, it wasn’t out of some grand plan,” Gus explains. “It was an elective that allowed me to leave school every other day and go to the tech center. The second year, I was able to go to work every day instead of sitting in a classroom. That hands-on experience set the tone for the rest of my career.”

What began as a side job and hobby slowly evolved into something much bigger. After gaining real-world experience in high school, he joined Fosters Plumbing & Heating in 2006. From the start, he knew that plumbing was more than just a job—it was a path full of potential, education, and opportunity.

Mastering the Craft of Plumbing

As a master plumber, Gus thrives on the challenge of solving problems, educating himself, and helping others. For him, the most rewarding part of the plumbing industry is the continuous learning process.

“There’s always something new to learn,” he shares. “That’s what I love about it—every day brings something different. Whether it’s a new technique, a unique problem, or just learning from a customer or colleague, the opportunities are endless.”

For Gus, being a master plumber isn’t just about technical skills; it’s about building relationships and making a positive impact in the community.

“Customer success stories mean everything to me,” he says. “I take pride in following through with what I say, providing the best service possible, and making sure the job is done right. Building relationships with customers and earning their trust is something I’m truly passionate about.”

Embracing the Freedom of the Trades

Another aspect of the job that keeps him engaged is the variety.

“The most rewarding part of my job is the satisfaction of doing a good job,” he reflects. “I don’t cut corners, and I’m always focused on getting it right. And the variety is huge. I go from job to job every day; it’s never the same thing twice. That keeps things interesting and keeps me on my toes.”

In an industry where it’s easy to rush through jobs to get to the next one, Gus follows the principle that the most important job of the day is the one you’re currently on.

“With so many calls coming in, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to rush through the day, but that’s a mistake,” he advises. “Every job is important. I remind myself to do it right, or don’t do it at all. That focus has served me well, both in my career and in life.”

Motivation Beyond the Workbench

For Gus, motivation doesn’t come from external accolades or awards; it comes from a deep sense of purpose.

“I’m driven by many things. I support my family, I get to work alongside my best friend, and I’m part of his success. I’m always striving to be better. Plumbing isn’t a dead-end job—it’s a career with growth, potential, and meaning.”

This drive to improve isn’t limited to the workplace. Outside of work, Gus stays active, training at the gym with Tirrell and focusing on his physical fitness.

“I’m currently training for an Ironman, which is a whole other challenge. It’s been an amazing experience, and it aligns with the discipline and commitment I put into my work.”

Achievements Beyond Work

When asked about a standout achievement, Gus proudly recalls completing a 103-mile cycling race with his friends Tirrell, owner of TP&L Contracting Services, and Jay Khoeler.

“That was such a great feeling—pushing ourselves to the limit and achieving something together. It wasn’t just about the race, but the journey and the camaraderie that made it so special.”

Though his career and athletic pursuits are impressive, Gus’s life is also filled with moments of reflection and growth outside of work. His passion for building relationships extends to his personal life, where he is involved in Men’s Alliance and church activities. These connections, along with the support of his family, keep him grounded and focused.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

When asked about his proudest accomplishments, he doesn’t point to one specific thing.

“I take pride in everything I do, from work to personal goals. I do it all with purpose,” he says. Whether it’s training for a race, mentoring others, or solving complex plumbing issues, Gus gives everything his best effort.

As he looks to the future, he’s excited about the continuous growth of TP&L Contracting Services.

“I’m excited to keep growing, learning, and developing new skills. I’ll always strive to be better, whether it’s in plumbing, fitness, or life in general. There’s always room for improvement, and that’s what keeps me going.”

A Hidden Talent

Interestingly, not many people know that when Gus was younger, he competed in horse riding.

“It’s a fun fact that I don’t often share, but I did ride competitively when I was younger. It taught me a lot about discipline, focus, and pushing myself to the limit,” he adds with a smile.

The Bottom Line

From his humble beginnings in a high school elective to becoming a master plumber and a business owner, Gus’s career is built on purpose, continuous learning, and a commitment to doing things the right way. Whether he’s solving complex plumbing issues, skydiving, or racing across a 103-mile course, he approaches everything with dedication, discipline, and a focus on making a difference. For him, there’s no such thing as a “dead-end” job—only opportunities for growth, relationships, and meaningful impact.
